I’m irritated by the label “gamer.” It’s so exclusive. It immediately constructs a wall between “gamers” and “non-gamers.” Not only is that distinction holding us back from expanding the video game-playing audience, it’s an outright lie. It’s creating a reality that doesn’t even exist. Everybody plays games, just like everybody listens to music (except you don’t hear most people labelling themselves as “music listeners” or some other exclusive identifier). Poker is a game. Hide and seek is a game. Your favourite sport is a game. Coupon clipping can be turned into a game. I feel like, as a whole, the industry works hard to distinguish itself from other media when really we should be trying to relate to what people already know and love.
Anyway, the point is I’m not a gamer; I’m a person who enjoys playing games. And I think it’s safe to assume that you are, too :)
